Why Are Ecological and Carbon Footprints Considered “Guiding Metrics” for Sustainability?
In an era of accelerating globalization and climate crisis, measuring the ecological footprint helps identify the degree to which resource consumption exceeds Earth’s ecological capacity. In parallel, the carbon footprint provides a clear quantification of greenhouse gas emissions from the activities of organizations, businesses, or individuals.
These two indicators are not only academically significant, but also serve as policy-making tools, green strategy design frameworks, and ESG assessment metrics. They are embedded in various international standards such as GRI, TCFD, and the GHG Protocol.
