On the morning of November 9, 2025, in the cozy setting of The Xi Café (Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City), the Research Institute for Applied Tourism (RIAT) successfully hosted its first Coffee Talk under the theme “Building and Managing an Effective Academic Profile.”
The sharing session, presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Quang Dai Tuyen, attracted the participation of numerous lecturers, researchers, and graduate students from various universities and research institutes in the region, including Ho Chi Minh City University of Culture, Gia Dinh University, Vietnam Aviation Academy, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, Hue University of Tourism, Van Lang University, University of Finance and Marketing, Saigon University of Technology, Van Hien University, Ho Chi Minh City Branch of the Vietnam Women’s Academy, and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities – VNUHCM, among others.
A Gentle and Inspiring Morning
Unlike a formal academic seminar, RIAT’s Coffee Talk was designed as an open and friendly space — where researchers could share, exchange ideas, and learn from one another through genuine academic conversations.
Over the course of two hours, participants revisited the seemingly simple yet profoundly important concept of the academic profile — a foundational element in shaping one’s personal scholarly brand in the digital era.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Quang Dai Tuyen emphasized:“An academic profile is not merely a place to store publications; it reflects the entire journey of research, learning, and dedication of each scholar.”
He further noted that building a meaningful profile is a long-term and strategic process, grounded in perseverance and integrity — beginning with defining one’s core research identity, maintaining regular updates, and fostering both local and international academic connections.
More Than a Profile – It’s About Connection
In the open and relaxed atmosphere of a weekend morning, participants were guided on how to use academic platforms such as Google Scholar, ORCID, Scopus, ResearchGate, and Academia.edu, while also reflecting on how to uphold academic integrity — the very essence of scholarly credibility.
Several sincere questions were raised: How can one avoid confusion when authors share similar names? How can an academic profile move beyond listing publications to truly reflect the researcher’s values and individuality?
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Quang Dai Tuyen, such genuine questions open new perspectives, helping scholars better understand how to shape and express their own research journeys.
Coffee Talk – A Warm Space for Scholarly Exchange
The first Coffee Talk concluded with laughter and unfinished conversations. Many participants stayed longer to continue their discussions — asking questions, sharing experiences, and exchanging research directions — embodying the very spirit of a “weekend coffee of learning” that RIAT hopes to nurture.
A representative from RIAT shared that the Coffee Talk series will be held regularly, creating a casual yet meaningful platform for academic exchange, where lecturers, researchers, and students can meet, learn, and collectively cultivate a spirit of scholarship.
Upcoming sessions will explore practical themes such as international publication trends, digital tools in research, and the use of AI in managing academic data.
Through the Coffee Talk series, RIAT aims to promote a friendly and accessible academic culture, where each gathering not only brings valuable insights but also sparks inspiration and strengthens the network of scholars in Vietnam.
“Just a cup of coffee on a weekend morning — yet enough for someone to leave with a new idea, a new connection, and perhaps a small spark to keep walking their research path.”
