The development journey of the village not only reflects a path out of hardship but also showcases the agency and adaptability of the Black H\u2019Mong community in embracing tourism without compromising their cultural identity. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"705\" data-end=\"747\">Tourism as a Catalyst for Village Transformation<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"749\" data-end=\"1030\">According to Ms. Vy B, a local resident, Ban Lai previously had little to no tourism activity, and villagers relied heavily on subsistence agriculture. However, in the past 20 years, tourism has slowly made its way along dusty trails\u2014bringing with it both opportunities and challenges. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"749\" data-end=\"1030\"><em>\u201cAround 20 years ago, we had very few tourists coming&#8230; Life was harder. But then we saw they enjoyed visiting, so we decided to try homestays.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1222\" data-end=\"1499\">Recognizing visitors\u2019 interest in cultural immersion, many households began shifting toward homestay-based tourism. With support from local networks and civil society organizations, residents received training in hospitality, guest engagement, and environmental preservation. <\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Black Hmong and a Different Way of Life\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jg9aNvmVvM0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1501\" data-end=\"1538\">Homestays as an Economic Gateway<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1540\" data-end=\"1810\">Within just a few years, the homestay model in Ban Lai experienced significant growth. Numerous families\u2014particularly women\u2014ventured into tourism entrepreneurship, offering authentic H\u2019Mong-style accommodations with hands-on experiences such as weaving, cooking, and farming. <\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1812\" data-end=\"1981\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"1981\">\u201cNow our village is changing&#8230; I\u2019m happy to see visitors come. People like me can run homestays and earn money. It\u2019s a better life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"2138\">Tourism has not only improved household incomes but also enhanced living standards and community visibility, empowering ethnic minority groups within modern Vietnamese society.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2140\" data-end=\"2187\">Women of Ban Lai \u201cBringing the Village to the City\u201d<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2189\" data-end=\"2504\">A turning point in Ban Lai\u2019s tourism journey came when 11 residents, mostly women, traveled to Hanoi to meet with travel agencies, including EXO Travel. For many, it was their first time leaving the mountains\u2014to directly present and \u201csell\u201d their village and homestay services. <\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2506\" data-end=\"2628\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2508\" data-end=\"2628\">\u201cWe had around 11 people go meet tour companies&#8230; we had to try to sell our village and homestay in Lai.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2630\" data-end=\"2831\">This trip served as both a promotional mission and a learning experience, offering villagers valuable insights into the tourism market, customer expectations, and modern lodging models such as resorts, hotels, and hostels.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2833\" data-end=\"2933\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2835\" data-end=\"2933\">\u201cBecoming a tourist myself was amazing&#8230; it\u2019s truly a different world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2935\" data-end=\"3083\">They also brought along traditional handicrafts to sell at Hanoi\u2019s night market\u2014promoting local culture while generating supplementary income.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3085\" data-end=\"3124\">Culture as the Foundation for Sustainable Development<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3126\" data-end=\"3438\">While open to new ideas, the Black H\u2019Mong of Ban Lai remain committed to preserving their heritage. Although greater access to education and urban exposure for youth is seen as positive, it also presents challenges to maintaining the language, clothing, and customs of the community. <\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3440\" data-end=\"3556\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3442\" data-end=\"3556\">\u201cI want to teach the young to preserve this culture&#8230; if we don\u2019t, we will lose it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3558\" data-end=\"3706\">Locals believe that their unique cultural identity is what draws visitors to Ban Lai\u2014and it must be safeguarded to ensure sustainable tourism.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3713\" data-end=\"3742\">A Future Rooted in Confidence and Community-Led Change<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3744\" data-end=\"4039\">The story of Ban Lai exemplifies how ethnic minority communities can take ownership of tourism as a development tool.
